Helping Inexperienced Scouts with Their Fear of Camping
Some Scouts are naturally adventurous, always willing and excited to try new things. Others? … Not so much.
One is not necessarily better than the other. (We’ve seen plenty of the first type get themselves in trouble because of their lack of fear.)
Both can be worked with.
In an article from a 2011 issue of Scouting magazine they cover different ways to help inexperienced Scouts get over their anxiety when it comes to the great outdoors.
2023 National Jamboree
We still have spots open, and it is not yet too late to register! There are currently timely items for 2023 National Scout Jamboree planned July 18-28, 2023, at Summit Bechtel High Adventure Base in West Virginia.

While not official, National may be raising the fee for participants for any new registrants starting in September. We are still working on receiving communications on details but now is a great opportunity to take advantage of possible cost savings.
Jamboree Scholarships are linked to National registration site. The first round of scholarship requests is due by July 31st but there is another round from August 1st to December 31st, 2022.
Here are the event details:
Depart on July 18, 2023, by coach bus, stop overnight on the way, and get to the Jamboree on July 19.
Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts ages 12-17 can attend; troop leaders, Venturers, and Sea Scouts ages 18-20 can go as program-eligible adults.
Youth qualifications for the National Jamboree:
- MUST have a current BSA membership.
- MUST be at least 12 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree but has not reached his or her 18th birthday by the last day of the Jamboree.
- Be approved by the unit leader and local council.
- MUST have appropriate parent/guardian complete the online parental consent. (An email will be sent to the parent/guardian during the application process.)
- Participate in pre-Jamboree training experience with local council and unit leader.
Scouts register individually and are grouped by geographic regions of Patriots’ Path Council into provisional troops. There will be a north, south, east, and west troop for male Scouts, and a council-wide troop for female Scouts.
The cost will be approximately $2,100, paid in installments based on current budgeted costs.

Reducing the Dangers of Insect Bites
Recently, the CDC has seen a rise in reports of reactions to insect bites and stings at summer camps across the country. While not all insect bites are life-threatening, some individuals can have more severe reactions to various types of bites than others, which may require additional medical attention. Learn how to help your campers avoid bug bites and stings as well as the diseases these insects may carry. New Video for Online Program Resources
A new video has been created to help unit leaders navigate the Scouts BSA Resource Website. It’s a quick 10-minute tour of the website to guide you through the Troop Leader and Troop Program Re-source portion of the page. There is so much good information in these sections, but they are often overlooked or just hard to find.
Please take a minute (or 10) to watch and then share it with your fellow Scout Leaders!
Unit Roster Clean-up
Now is the time of year your unit leaders should be focusing on their leadership team moving into the fall to prepare for the recharter season. Getting the right people in place now really helps for a smoother recharter season.
Q) Will any current registered adult’s youth protection expire before December? How can you find out?
A) A key 3 leader can run a youth protection training report under Training Manager in My.Scouting.org
Q) Do you have the right people in the right roles?
A) View your roster in My.Scouting.org…..not Scoutbook, to see who’s officially registered with your unit, and in what position. The charter organization representative and charter organization representative delegate both have access to move people around into the positions they should be in using the position manager tool under organization manager, in My.Scouting.org.
Q) Has anyone left the unit that is listed as an authorized user on your Scout shop unit account?
A) If anyone has left the unit that has access to Application Manager in My.Scouting.org, you’ll want to reach out to your district executive to request these members be removed from your roster.
Q) Has anyone left that has access to Application Manager in My.Scouting?
A) View your unit on www.BeAScout.org to see what information is displayed. If you need to update it, a key 3 leader can do that through Unit Pin under Organization Manager, in My.Scouting.org.

These are all things you should be reviewing with your committee now.
