Guidelines Help Provide a Safe Environment for Scouts
This year as we celebrate the National Safety Council’s 25th anniversary of National Safety Month, the Patriots’ Path Risk Management Committee encourages all Scouts and Scouters to review some of the important guidelines and procedures available to help you provide a safe environment for all involved in the Scouting program.
We are spotlighting the following safety programs and resources:
Transporting Scouts Safely
Driving can be one of the most dangerous forms of travel. Motor vehicle accidents can lead to serious injuries and even fatalities — not only for the driver but for passengers and others on the road. Motor vehicle accidents typically produce the most frequent and severe liability claims affecting the Scouting family.
This Risk Zone PDF provides tips on:
• Ways to prevent distractions
• Fatigue while driving
• SUVs and vans
• Traveling with trailers
• Insurance information
Information on the use of vans as transportation is available by clicking here.
A Driver Improvement Program is available through your my.scouting.org account.
This program is based on the concepts of defensive driving, recognizing hazards, and preventable collisions. Go to the BSA Learn Center under expanded learning. Once completed, a certificate will be generated and the participant’s training records updated.
The Sweet Sixteen of BSA Safety
Few youth organizations encompass the breadth, volume, and diversity of physical activity common to Scouting, and none enjoy a better safety record. The key to maintaining and improving this exemplary record is the conscientious and trained adult leader who is attentive to safety concerns.
As an aid in the continuing effort to protect participants in a Scout activity, the BSA National Health and Safety Committee and the Council Services Division of the BSA National Council have developed the “Sweet Sixteen” of BSA safety procedures for physical activity. These 16 points, which embody good judgement and common sense, are applicable to all activities.
Scouting Safely Online Resources
A large BSA repository of safety related material and resources including the Guide to Safe Scouting, SAFE Checklist, Safety Moments, Annual Health and Medical Record, Incident Reporting information, Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Training, and Answers to Your General Health and Safety Questions.
Online Registration Transfers Available
Updates from Mike Wellech, PPC registration manager:
Online Transfers Unit to Unit or Council to Council
Moving out of the area? You can process your transfer to another council using your My.Scouting account.
Just like transferring Scouts or adults to another unit within Patriots’ Path Council, you can now transfer yourself or your child, or a unit leader can transfer your child to a unit in another council.
Personal Scouting Unit Advancement Detail Report
Found in ‘Roster’ for unit leaders, once a person is selected (youth or adult), you can print a detail of all the registration, training, and advancement records for that person. Note: This is a one person at a time report.

Workshops to Introduce Scouts to Merit Badges
The 2021 Merit Badge Introduction Workshop will be held on three separate dates – November 6, November 13 and December 11.
Virtual classes will be available via Zoom on all three dates, and some in-person classes will be offered on November 6 and 13 at Camp Winnebago and Flanders Park in Mount Olive.
Online registration is now open through the council calendar at www.ppcbsa.org.
The purpose of the workshop is to introduce badges to the Scouts and to help them understand the merit badge process. For most of the merit badges, Scouts will obtain a partial but will not be able to complete the merit badge at this event. Once registered in a workshop class, unit leaders will need to assign each Scout to the counselor (as listed in the catalog) in Scoutbook.

Raritan Valley Cub Scouts Have Fun at Camp
From June 4 to 6, Raritan Valley District held its spring Cub Scout family camporee event at Winnebago Scout Reservation.
Over 250 Scouts, siblings and parents enjoyed a weekend of shooting sports, fishing, a petting zoo, and pony rides.
Over the weekend, several Cub Scouts earned their Bobcat rank, created cards for kids in the Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital in New Brunswick, and spent the night outdoors.
New Eagle Scouts Recognized at Brunch
The Patriots’ Path Council held its 2021 Eagle Scout Recognition and Reunion Brunch on Sunday, June 6, at Camp Winnebago.
Over 300 guests were excited to be out and recognize the new Eagle Scouts and 2021 Hall of Fame Inductees.
This 17th annual recognition included the class of Eagles from January 1, 2020, to February 8, 2021.
The brunch gave Eagle Scouts the opportunity to stand proudly and be honored together for what is one of the greatest achievements of their lifetime.
Patriots’ Path Council looks forward to celebrating its next class of Eagles in 2022 and to reuniting with all of the Eagle Scouts from previous years.
Munsee Scouts Enjoy Weekend at Camp Somers
Munsee District conducted a joint Scout BSA and Cub Scout family camping overnight weekend at Camp Somers June 5 and 6.
There were 142 youth and adults who participated.
The main program was shooting sports, fishing and hiking. It was a great opportunity for families to get out and enjoy camping since the COVID-19 pandemic started.
Ford Units Show Their Support on Memorial Day
Cub Scout packs 26 and 53, along with Scouts BSA troops 26 and 53, sponsored by the Fords Fire Company in Fords, New Jersey, had a great turnout on Memorial Day to show their support for the Fords VFW, and to show their respect for those who served and sacrificed their lives to keep our country safe and free.
